Is there any reason to not get an S80 V8? I’ve lusted after one of these understated Swedes since they came out a decade or so ago. Pricing has dropped anywhere from $12k to $20k for this flagship sedan with a Yamaha V8. Thoughts?

as usual, check the service records, and beware the transmissions. Motor is great as far as I am concerned. Much better in an S80 than a slug of an XC90

I mean, the ZF in my E46 hasn’t shit the bed so the god of Transmissions must love me.

Transmissions are fairly ok as far as Volvo transmissions go in these. To 505’s point, service records will be the difference between a $12k example and a more than $12k example.

Great V8, looks nice near boats, easy to find with low-ish mileage. Nothing really wrong with it.

I have a 2005 S80 T5 and it honestly seems amply powered to me. I would think that the V8 would probably get torque steer-y. But I can understand wanting to own it on the grounds of being unique.

The V8 is AWD. I would imagine that would pair nicely with 311hp.

God knows how many times I've gently cajoled and suggested my dad get one of those for my mum when we get the money. She likes sedans and I'm sure she won't mind if I secretly strap a straight pipe to it...

There’s one in Laurel with 70k miles for $14k. Sounds pretty cheap.

Stupid question - are the Yamaha V8s in these related at all to the Yamaha V6 used in the early Taurus SHO or the Yamaha tuned, Ford designed V8 in the later SHOs?
Also, does anyone know why these were discontinued? I remember reading the road tests when these were new and no one had anything bad to say about the engines.

It was the same for me ... pretty sure it adds a lot to the enjoyment of the car. I never thought I’d hear music like that from a Swedish tank.

From what I can tell the Volvo B8444S V8 was built by Yamaha but designed by Volvo. I’m not sure why Volvo discontinued the V8, but it probably has to do with emissions, fuel economy and that they could get similar power from a 5 or 6 cylinder straight engine with better packaging and at a cheaper cost (inhouse engine vs paying Yamaha to build them).
The 3.4L V8 in the Taurus SHO was based off the Ford Duratec 25 V6 engine, and was built by Ford and Yamaha; Ford supplied blocks and heads (designed by Cosworth) and Yamaha put everything together. Also, the Duratec 25 engine was designed with input from Porsche, then sold to Ford who had Cosworth develop the head and assembly techniques. Very cool engine history.
The Ford SHO V6 engine was based on the Ford Vulcan V6 and was designed & built by Yamaha, but is unrelated to the 3.4L V8 IIRC.

I wish that I had remembered these when I was shopping a couple of months ago. I love my Dart, but these are lovely. V8 AWD and good looks? Yes please.

Yamaha V8 is beyond reliable (you can easily see 200k+ out of these - except for the ones in early model XC90’s), it comes with cool features like adaptive cruise control, cooled and heated seats, and a bunch of other stuff.
Great values if you’re looking for a good highway cruiser. I assume they ditched the engine for the T6 for the sake of gas mileage.

Isn’t it weird that a noise from a machine makes everyone smile? Is the V8 noise built into our genes? I don’t want a V8 Volvo but now I have a strong urge to put an LS1 into my Town and Country. Might fit better in my Forester.

So for the same price I could get a beat to hell E39 M5 with oodles of miles or a decades old Mercedes-Benz that’s slower and has less features? That being said those cars are way more awesome, and probably won’t depreciate any more like the Volvo would.
Jalop logic is so strange sometimes.
